Af ter fu rther examination, it turns out that the body is that of two sepa rate corpses, with one half belonging to a Danish prostitute. Saga Norén, from the Sw edish s ide, an d Martin Rohde, fr om the Da nish, lead the investi gation to catch the murderer.[4][5 ] The invest igation quickly escalate s as a jou rnalist, Dani el Ferbé, whose car was used in the crime, begins receivin g phone c alls. The caller, who becomes known as the "Truth Terrorist", claims to be committing his crimes in orde r to dr aw attent ion to various social problems. A soci al worke r, Stefan Lindberg, whose sister beco mes a victim of the Trut h Terrorist, becomes an early suspect . However, even ts soon le ad the Danish and Swedish teams to con clude that the killer h as co nnections to the police. They discover that the crimes have been planned over a per iod of sever al ye ars. Th e trail eventually leads them to Jens, a Danish policeman and former close friend of Martin' s, who was t hought to have committed suicid e af ter an accident on the bridge caused the deaths of his wife an d son. In th e course of t he inve stigation, Martin and Saga develop a close working relationship, although they a re very different people. Martin has a twenty- year old son from his firs t marriage , Au gust, who i s now li ving wit h Martin and his curre nt wife, M ette, by whom Martin has thre e childre n; afte r Martin has had a vasectomy, Mette dis covers that she is expecting twins. Saga lives alone and doe s not see m to feel she needs a serious relation ship , instead p icking up men i n bars for casual sex . She appe ars to ha ve symptoms consi stent with Asperger syndrome, res ulting in difficulty e stablishing relationships and feeli ngs of inadequac y in managing people ; she refuses a promotio n for this l atter reason. After the killer has murdered several pe ople an d successfully thrown re d herri ngs in t he way of t he investigation , his true purpose - to st rike at Martin himself - eventually becomes clear . Je ns, now calling himself Sebastian Sandstrod, first app roaches Mette, who is susceptible to h is advances, aft er learning tha t Martin has slept with Charlotte Sö ringer, a woman who is periph erally involved in the investigation. Sebastian lures Met te and he r children to a remote spot where he subjects them to a terrifying ordeal, locking them in with a room and giving her a hand grenade wit h its pin remove d to hold as long as she can. Howeve r, Sa ga r eali ses t hat August is th e real target.
