The body, c ut in hal f at the  waist, has  been placed  precisely on  the border between t he countries , thus falling under the jurisdiction of bo th th e Danish an d Swedish police agencies. After  further exam ination, it tur   ns out t hat th e body is  that of two sepa  rate corpses, with one half bel onging to a Danish prostitute. Saga Norén, from  the Sw edish si de, and Mar tin Rohde, f rom the Danish, lead the inve stigation to catch the murde rer.[4][5] 　　The i nvestigatio n quickly escalates as   a journali  st, Daniel Ferbé, whose ca r wa s used in the crim e, beg  ins receivi ng phone calls.  The caller, who become s kn own as the "Truth Ter rorist&q uot; , cla ims to be com mitting his crim es in o rder to draw attention to v  arious social pr oblems. A so cial wo rker , Stefan Lindberg, whose siste  r becomes a victim of the Truth  Terrorist, becomes a n ea rly  suspec t. However, events soon  lead the Danish and Swedish teams  to conclude that the killer has con nections to the poli ce. They  discove  r that the crimes have been  planned ove r a period  of severa  l years . The trail even tually lead s them to Jens,  a Danish  policeman and former  close friend of Mart in's,  who  was thou  ght to ha ve committed suicide after an acci  dent on the bridg e ca  used the deaths of hi s wi fe and s on.　　In the c   ourse of the investigation, Martin and Saga develop a close working rel ationship, a lthough they are very diff erent peopl e. Martin has a twen ty-year old  son f rom his fi rst mar riage, A ugust, who is now living with Martin and his current wife, Me tte, by whom Ma rtin has three children; after Martin has had a vasectomy,   Mette discove  rs th at she is expecti ng twins. Saga liv es alone and does n ot seem to feel she needs a serious relatio nship , instead   pick ing up men in bars for casual sex. She appears to have sy mptoms  consistent with Asperger syndrome,  resulting  in difficul  ty establishing relati onships and feelings of  inadequacy in managing peopl e; she refus es a promotion for this latter reason.　　After the killer has murdered s everal people and successfully t hrown red herrings in the way of the i nvestigatio n, his tr ue purpose - to strike at Ma rtin himself  - event ually becomes cl  ear. Jens, now calling himself Sebastian Sandstrod, first approa  ches Mette, who is susc eptible t o his advances, a fter learning that Mar tin has  slept with Charlotte Söringer, a woman who is  peripherally involved in the invest   igation. Se bastian lu res Mette and her ch  ildren to a remo te spot  where he subjects them to a terrifying  ordeal, lo cking them in with a room a nd giving he r a hand grenade with its pin remove d to hold as long as   she can . However, Saga realises  that August  is the real target.
