T he body, cut  in hal f at the waist,  has b een placed precisely on the border between the countries, thus falling un der  the jurisdictio n of bot h the Danish and Swedish police agenci es. After further e xami nation, i t turns out that the body is th at of tw o separate corpse s, with on e half belonging to a Danish prostitu te. Saga Norén, from the  Swedish side, a nd Mart in Rohde, from the Danish, l  ead the i nvestigation to  catch the murderer .[4][5]　　The investigation quickl y esc alates as a journalist , Daniel Fe rbé, whose car was use d in the crime, begins re ceiving  phone calls. The caller,  who becomes known as the & quot;Trut h Terror ist", c laims to be committing his crimes in order to draw  attention to various socia l problems  . A social work er, Stefan  Lindberg, whose sister beco mes a victim of  the Truth Terrorist, becomes an ear ly suspect. Howe ver, events soon lead the Danish and Swedish teams  to conclude  that th  e ki ller has c onnect ions to  the po  lice . Th ey discove r that the crimes have been planned over a period of several years. The t rail eventu ally leads t hem to J ens, a Danis h pol  iceman and former cl ose friend of Martin's, who  was  thought to have commi tted s uicide after  an accident on the brid ge caused the d eaths of hi  s wife and son.　　In  the course  of the invest igation, Martin  and Saga d evelop a close w orki ng rel ationship, although they are ve ry differe nt people.  Marti n has a twe nty- year old son  from his first marriage,  August, who i s now  living with Martin and his cu rrent wi fe, Mette, b y who  m Martin has three children;  after Martin has   had a vase  ctomy, Mett e discovers that she  is expecting twins. S aga lives al one and d oes not seem to feel she needs  a serious relatio nship , instead picking up  men in bars for casual s ex. She appears to hav e symptoms consistent with Asperger syndrome, resulting in difficulty  establi shing relationship s and f eelings o f inadequacy in  managing  peop  le; she refuses a promotion f  or thi s latter reason.　　After the k iller h as murdered several p eople and successfully thrown r ed herrings in the wa y of the investigation,  his  true purpose - to st rike at Mart  in himself - eventually becomes clear. Jens, now call  ing himself Sebastian Sandstrod, first approaches Mette, who is suscepti ble to hi  s advances, after learning that Mar tin has sle pt with Cha rlotte Söringer, a woman w ho i s peripherally  involved in the investigat ion. Se bastian lures Mette and her c hildren to a rem ote spot whe re he s  ubjects them to  a terrifyi ng ordeal, locki ng them in with a room and giving her a hand grenade with  its pin r emove d to ho  ld as long as s he ca n. However, Saga realise s that August is the real target.
