The body,  cut in  half a t the waist, has been pla ced precisel y on the border  between the countries,  thus fal ling under t he jurisdic tion of both the Danish and Swedish police agencies. After furthe r exam ination, it turns out that the body is   that of two separate corpses , with one half bel onging to a Danish prostit ute. Saga Norén  , fro m the Swedis h side, and Martin Rohde, from t he Danish, l ead the investiga tion to cat  ch the murd erer.[4][5  ]　　The  investigat  ion quickly  escal ates  as a j ournalist,  Daniel Fer bé, whose car was used in t he cri me, b egins receiv ing phone calls. The caller, who becomes known as the "Tru th Terrorist&qu ot;, claims to be commit ting his crimes in order to draw attention to various  social problems.  A social worker, Stefan Lin dberg, w hose sister  becomes a victim of the T ruth Ter rorist, be comes an early suspect. H owev er, events soon lead the Danish and  Swedis h teams to  conclude that the  killer  has connections to t he police. They discover tha t the crimes have been planned ove r a period of several y ears. The trail eventua lly le ads them to Jens , a Danish policeman and former c  lose friend of Martin 's, who was thought to have committ ed suicide after an a ccident on the bridge caused the deaths of his wife and son.　　  In the course of the  investigati on, Mar  tin a nd Saga develop a close  worki ng relationsh ip, although they are very  different people.  Martin has a twenty-year old son from  his  first ma  rriage, August, who is now living  with Martin and  his curre nt wife, Mette, by whom Mart  in has thre e childr en; after Martin has ha  d a va  sectomy , Mette discovers that sh e is expecting twins. Saga live s alone  and  does not  seem to feel  she ne eds a ser ious rel  ationship, instead picking up men in  bar s for casu al se x. She appears to have sy mptoms consistent with Asperger syndrome, res ulting in  difficulty e stablishing relationships and feelings of i nadequa cy in managing peopl e; she refu ses a promotion for t his latter  reason.　　After the kil  ler has murdered sev eral people an d succe ssfully  thrown red herr  ings in the way of the investigation, his true  purpose -  to s  trike at M artin himself  - ev entually becomes cle  ar. Jen s, now calling himself Sebastian Sandstrod , firs t appro aches Mette, who is s usce ptible to his advances, after learning that Martin has s lept with Charlotte S öringer, a woman who is peripher ally involved  in the in vestigation. Sebastian lures Mette and her childr en to a  remote s  pot where he sub jects  them to a terri fying orde al, locking the m in with a room and giving   her a hand grenade with its pin re moved  to ho ld as  long as  she can. However, Saga r ealises that August is the  real t arget.
