At Mac9;s urging, Norma tried to reas on with Paul, bu t he insists that he loves Barbara and laughs her off. Barbara is e qually disda inful of her and agrees to meet Paul f or dinner that nig ht at his apartment . No rma&# 39;s husband Steph en Lawry is a scient ist leaving that night on a trip to test a secret invention on w hich he has been working for th e governm ent and the war effort. Worried about Barbara, she uses a prete xt not to accompany Stephen and goes to the apartment. When Barbara arrives, she fin ds Paul's dead body and thinks that No rma has killed him, even thoug h Norma insists that he was de ad when she arrived. Barbara threatens to call the police un less she leave s Stephen. Fearing that a scandal will hu rt him, Norma agree s. Norma the n turns t o Mac, who goes to Paul's apartment with Friday and Marty, only to find the body and the r ug under it missing . A man ar rives to replace the rug and Mac hides in a closet, overhearing a telep hone call to Norma& #39;s nu mber from "Gabriel& quot; to "Ve ra." ; Mac accidentally giv es himself away, but with Friday ' ;s help overpow ers Gabr iel, who refuses to talk. M ac has Marty hide him to keep him under wraps. Norma retu rns to her country hom e unexpectedly, w hich disc ourages an espionage ring that includ es her butler, Hansen, from breaking into Stephen ' s safe and stealin g his plans. They have killed Gerente, who was al so an agent , and hidd en the body. Mac arrives with Frid ay at Norm a's house and pretends to be her curmudgeon ly &q uot;Uncle Mac " w ho has come for a v isit. His b lindness lulls any suspicions Hansen might have about h im. Shor tly thereaft er, Barbara comes home from an " ;emergency rehears al" ;, called to get her out of t he house by her director, Cheli Scott, who inveigles an invita tion to spend the nigh t at the L awry home. U nknown to Barba ra and Norma, Cheli is the ringle ader of th e spies . Cheli orde red Paul killed because his affection for Bar bara wa s beginni ng to li mit his effectiveness, a nd she immediately susp ects Mac is not what he seems. Gabr iel';s wife Ve ra, t he Lawrys& #39; maid, is also a par t of the plot. When Gabriel does not retur n home, Vera bec omes hysterical w ith worry. Mac secretl y asks Ve ra to m eet him in the gree nhouse, using her worry about Gabrie l as a lure. She is observed by t he others, ho wever, a nd is killed by Hansen befor e she can reach Mac. The spie s cut the ho use' s telephone wi res so that Mac and Norma can not call the police, and Cheli h as Mac locked up under guard. Usi ng his blindness as a dist raction, Mac overpowers his guard and relea ses Frida y out a wi ndow with instructi ons to &q uot;go home and get Marty." Stephen arrives home and Chel i threaten s his family if h e does not give her the fin al step in cr eating his invention, which was not in the safe. Barb ara finally realizes how much Norma actuall y cares for her. Mac tries to sta ll f or t ime, b ut is lo cked i n the cellar. When Hansen goes to k ill him, Mac has broke n the light bulb and hi s advantage of total da rkness helps him over come the spy . Marty and Friday return with the police. When Friday is spotted by a lookout, M ac overp owers him and is saved f rom being shot by anothe r lookout by Friday.
