Her headstrong 17-year-old  step -daughter  Barbara, h erself a promising act ress, is enamored with her leading man  in a sm all theater production , the much older Lothario  Pau l Gere nte. Paul,  who ha d once been Norma's lover, has c onvinced Bar bara that Norma actually wants Paul for hersel f and has only married her father Stephen for his money.  At Mac 's urging, Norma tried t o reason  with Paul, but  he insists th at he loves  Barbara and  laughs her off. Bar bara is equally  disdainfu l of her and agrees to meet Paul for dinner th  at night at  his ap artment.　　Norma' s husband Stephen Lawry  is a scientist leaving that night on  a trip to test a secret inventio n on whi  ch he has been working for  the government and t he war effort. Worri  ed abo ut Barbara, she uses a pretext n ot to accomp any Stephen and goes to   the apa rtment. Wh en Barbara arrives, she finds P  aul's dead body and thinks that No rma has killed him, even though Norma insists that he wa s dead  when  she arrived . Ba rbara  threatens to cal l the p olice unless she l eaves Steph en. Fearing that a scandal will hurt him, Norma  agrees. Norma then tu rns to Mac, who goes to  Paul' ;s apartment with Friday and Ma rty, only to find th e body and  the rug  under it mi ssing. A man arrives to repla ce the rug   and Mac hides i n a cl oset, overhearing a  telephone c all to Norma's number fro  m "Gabriel" to "Ver a." Mac accidentally  gives h imself aw ay, but wit h Frida y's help overpow ers G abriel, who refu ses to talk. Mac has Marty hide him  to keep him under wraps.　　Norma  returns to her country home   unexpecte dly, which discourages an esp ionage ring  that includes her butler, Han sen, from b reaking into S tephen';s safe and stealing his pla ns. They hav   e killed Ger  ente, who  was also an  agent, and hidden t he body. Mac arrives with Fr iday at Norma's ho use and pretends to be her curmudgeonly "U ncle Mac&quo  t; who has  come for a visit. His blindness lulls a ny sus  picions Hansen might  hav e about him. Shortly t hereafter, Barbar a co mes ho me f rom an &qu ot;emergency rehe arsa l",   called to get her out of  the house  by her direct or, C  heli Scott, who inve  igles an invitation to spend t he night at  the L awry home. Unknow n to Barbara and Norma, Cheli is the ringlea der of the s pies.  Cheli order ed Paul killed bec ause his affection f  or Barbara was beginning to  limit  his effectivene ss, and she immediately suspec ts Mac is not what he s eems.　　Gabriel's wife Vera, the Lawrys'  maid, is a lso a part of the p lot. When Gabriel does not return home, Ver a becom es hysterical with worry. Mac sec retly asks Vera  to meet him in  the greenhouse, using   her worry about Gabriel as  a lure. She is observed by the  others, however, and is ki lled by Hanse n befor e she ca n reach Mac. Th e spies   cut the h ouse9;s te lephon  e wires  so th  at Mac and Norma cann  ot call the police, an d Cheli  has Mac l ocke d up under guard  . Using his  blind ness  as a distra ction,  Mac overp owers his guard and rele ases Friday out a window with instr uction s to "go home and get Marty. " Steph en arrives home and Che li threatens his family if h e does not give her the fina  l step in creatin g his  invention,  which was not in the safe. Barbara finally  realizes how mu ch Norma a ctually care s for he r. Mac tries to  stall f or time, but  is locked in the cellar. When Hansen g oes to kill him, Mac h as broken the light  bulb and his advantage of total dark ness helps h im overcome the s py. Marty  and Frid ay return with the police. When  Friday is spott  ed by a lookout, Mac overpowers him and is saved from  bei ng shot by another lookout b y Friday.
