H owever, few people know about t he Welsh r oots tha t shaped his life and worl d-famous bui ldings. Now , leading Welsh architect J onath an Adams s ets off across Americ a to explore Frank Lloyd Wrigh t's masterpi eces for himself . Al ong the way , he uncovers the tempestuous life story of the man behi nd t hem and t he sign ificance of his radical fa mily background. In a career spanning seve n deca des, Frank Lloyd Wright b uilt over 50 0 buildings , and c hang ed the face of mod ern archit ecture: Fallingwater, the ho use over the waterfall, has been called the greatest hou se of the 20th centur y; t he spiral ling Guggenheim Museum in New York reinvented the art museum; the concrete Unity Temple was the first truly modern building in the world. But the underlying p hilosophy that links all Wright ' s buildings is as i mport ant as anything he built. Those ideas were rooted in the Unit aria n religion of Frank Lloyd Wright's mother. Anna Ll oyd Jones was born and r aised near Llandysul i n west Wa les a nd mi grated to America with her family in 1844, most likely to escape religious per secutio n. Her son, Frank, was rai sed in a Uni tarian commu nity in Wisc onsin, a small piece of Wal es in Am erica. The values he absorbed t here were based on the sancti ty of nat ure, the im porta nce of hard work, and the need to question convent ion and defy it wher e necessa ry. Wright 's arc hitecture was shaped by, and expressed, t hese beliefs. Frank Lloyd Wright s et out to create a new American architectur e for a new count ry. He b uilt his own lifelong hom e in the valle y he was ra ised in, and he named it after an ancient Wel sh bard c alled Taliesin. It was the sc ene o f many adv entures - an d a horrif ic crime. In 1914, a servant at Tali esin ran amok and killed seven people including Wright's partner, M amah Cheney, and her two you ng ch ildren . Wright rebuilt his home a nd went on to ma rry a Monte negrin woman, Olgivanna Milan off, some 30 years younger than him. It was Olgivanna who s truck upon the ide a that saved Wright39;s caree r after the Wall Str eet Crash and personal scanda l laid it low. She decided that her husband s hould take on apprent ices and that th e apprent ices s hould pay for the privilege. The Taliesin Fello wship ha d a hands -on approa ch, wi th apprentices often build ing extensions to Wright& #39;s own houses, labo uring and cookin g for him. S omehow it worked, las ting fo r deca des and n urturing hu ndreds o f young talents.< br/> Fra nk Lloy d Wright died in 1959 aged 91 while working on hi s final masterpiece, New York& #39;s incomparable Guggenheim Museum . He had been born in t he wake of the American civil war, the son of a pioneer, and died a television celebrity, in the s pace age. He is buried in the shadow of Taliesin, alongside h is Welsh ancesto rs. A 150 years after his birth, Jonathan Adam s argues that Frank Lloyd Wright is now a vitally important figure who can tea ch us h ow to build for a be tter world. Wright believed i n what he called o rganic a rchi tectu re; buildings tha t grace t he landscape, ex press an idea of how to live and r espond to individual need s. This bespoke approach - a philo sophy, not a style - puts him at the heart of modern architectur al thinking .
