This poetic love story fol lows a nouveau riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokul ski, t hrough a series of trials a nd tribula tions o ccas ioned by his o bsessive pa ssion for an a ristocrat ic b eauty, Iza bela Lecka, played by the famous Polish a ctress , Beata Tysz kiewicz. Plot: As a d escendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is forced to work as a w aiter at Hop fer's, a Warsaw restau rant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking part in the failed 1 863 Uprisin g agains t Ts arist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Sibe ria. On even tual return to Warsaw, he becomes a s alesman at M incel's ha berdashery . Marrying the la te ow ner's widow (who even tually dies), he comes in to m oney and u ses it to s et up a p artnership wit h a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants g o to Bulgaria during t he Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and Wokuls ki makes a for tune s uppl ying the Ru ssian Army. The ente rpri sing Wokulski now proves a romantic at heart, fal ling in love with Iz abela, d aughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristocr at, Tomasz Łęcki. In his quest to win Iza bela , Wokulski begins frequenting theatres and aris tocratic salons; and to hel p her financ ially distressed fath er, fou nds a company and sets the aristocr ats up as shareho lders in his bus iness.The indolen ce of thes e aristocrat s, who sec ure w ith the ir pensions, are too lazy to undertake n ew business ris ks, frust rates Wokulski. His ability to mak e money is respected but h is lack of fam ily an d social rank is c ondescended to. Because of his "he lp" (in secret) to Izabela 39;s imp ecunious but influential father, the girl b ecomes aware of his affect ion.
