《盲目的丈夫們》是由知名导演埃裏克·馮·施特羅海姆 执导的一部愛情片,薩姆·德·格拉斯 Francelia Billin 等倾情出演,该片讲述了: Two differences between this Austrian version and the gen erally av ailable American ve rsion a re immediately o bvious: th ey differ b oth in their length and in the language of the intert itles. The Ame rican ve rsion is only 1,883 metr es long - at 18 frames per second a difference of some 7 m inutes to the Austrian ver sion with 2,045 metres. Whe reas we originally presumed only a negligible diffe rence, resulting from the vary ing length of th e inte rtitles, a dire ct compari son has nevertheless shown tha t the Austrian ve rsion differ s from the American ver sion both in the mont age a nd in the d uration o f individual scenes. Yet how could it happen tha t the later regional distribution of a canonical US silent film was longer than the "original v ersion" ;? The prevalent American ve rsion of Blind Husbands d oes not correspond to th e ve rsion shown at the pre miere of 1919. T his little -known fac t was alrea dy published by Richard Koszars ki in 1983. The fi lm was re- released by Unive rsal Pic tures in 1924, in a vers ion tha t was 1,365 feet (416 metre s) shorter. At 18 frames per s econd, th is amounts to a time difference of 20 minutes! &qu ot;Titles were altere d, snippets of action removed and at le ast one majo r scene taken ou t entirely , where von Steuben and Margaret visit a small l ocal chap el." (Kosza rski) From the present state of research we c an assume that al l the known American copies o f the film derive from this shortened re-relea se version , a copy of which Univer sal donated to the Museum of Modern Art in 1941. According to Kos zarski the original negative of the film was des troyed someti me between 1956 and 1961 and has therefor e been irre trie vably lost. This information casts an interesting light on the Austrian version, which can be dated to the period between the summe r of 1921 and the winter of 1922. Furthermore, the c opy is some 200 met res lon ger th an the US versio n of 1924. If one follows t he details given by Richard Kosza rski and Arthur Lennig, this means that, as far as both its date and it s length are conc erne d, the Austrian version lies almost exactly in the middl e between the (lost) v ersion s hown at the premiere and the re-re leased one.A large pa rt o f the add itional length of the film can be traced to cuts that were made to t he 19 24 vers ion in almost every shot. Kosz arski describes h ow the begin ning and the end of sc enes were trimmed, in order to &q uot;speed up" the film. However , more exciting was t he discove ry that the Austria n version contains shots that are missing in the American one - shots/coun tershots, intertitle s - and furthermore shows d ifferences in its mon tage (i.e. the placing of the individual shots within a sequence) . All this indicates that Die Rache der Berge constitutes the oldest and mo st completel y preserved material of the film.
