It's a mostly som ber satirical piece, but st ory-wise, it languish es in i ts modest idea a bit long, becoming inco nsequentia l to all b ut those fa scinated by the realities of be ing famous. &quo t;Community Spirit&q uot; B olognini 39;s piece i sn't re ally a st ory. It's more of a visual ga g, in a sho rt seg ment that features Mangano offer ing to take an inj ured man to a hospital, driving him at breakn eck speed throughout the city, but n ot stopping at locations where he mig ht fin d ai d. I won't give away th e punchline here, but it suc ceeds in being amusing, even if it 39;s the kin d of t hing that only is interesting the first time through. "The Ear th Seen from the Moon" The e steemed writer/di rector , Pier Pa olo Pasolin i (S alo), crafts the middle segment, which is the most ar tistic and memorable of the five. Reminiscent in style to &quo t;Don Quixote" , a recentl y widowed father and his son trav el around the coun try in search of a new wife and moth er, and afte r a lon g period , th ey discove r the literally speechless Manga no. She b rings joy into their lives, but they are poor, and i n order to fi nd a better life for themsel ves, they concoct a scheme to try to make some quick cash. The story is contrived, an d not completely interesti ng, but the outlan dish performance s, artwork, and costumes does evoke great charm and likeability. Although mute, it39;s p robably the mo st appealing of Mangan o's five performances, and Toto is terrific. "The Sicilian" Franco Rossi directs the fourth an sh orte st piece , a strai ght-forw ard revenge story that comes and goes before it ever ha s a ch ance of b ecomi ng interesting. It39;s violent , but easily the least satisf ying of the five stories. "A Nigh t Like A ny Other" East wood's appearance is clearly the biggest attraction here, w hich was filmed i n between the Serg io Leone & quot;Dollar s" trilogy. It39;s an enjoyable de parture from his n ormal ro les, playing a comedic romantic lead, and he i s affably fun t o watch. Famed Italian director, Vittorio de Sica (The Bic ycle Thief, Umbert o D.) does a masterful job with the story, which perfectly blends the mundane and th e fan tasy in a visually satisfying way. The story is about a bored housewife (M angano, of c ourse), who tries in vain to get her husb and t o realize that he is no t as romantic as h e used to be.
