James May turned fifty the previous week. Also, the rally team composed of w ar amputees (pre viously mentioned in se ries 17, ep isode 6 ) finally completed their ch allenge of finishing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Review: James reviews the new Bentley Co ntinental GT, and notes the new e ngine and s ubtle ride characteristi cs. Believi ng that the Bentley, with four wheel dri ve sy stem and a big, powerfu l engi ne, can handle th ings worse than a Welsh countryside road, James t akes the car onto a We lsh stage of the World Rally Championship, w ith Kris Meeke behind th e wh eel, an d James being the co-driver. Despit e the car having less gri p, more weight , an electronic handb rake (unsuitable for usage on a rally stage) and James no t being proficie nt at givin g pace notes, the Bentley was ac tually faster than one o f the full WRC cars. Challenge: Jer emy attempts to bu ild a car smalle r than t he Peel P50, naming his creation the P45. It was based on a quad bik e, with bodywork f itte d, des igned to wrap around the driver. Since it was Hammond39;s turn to select the c hallenge locati on, the team went to the Western United States. Jeremy selected th e Lexus LFA, James c hose the ne w As ton Martin Vanquish, and Ric hard took the SRT Viper. Af ter a brief drive in the Nevada des ert, the trio h eaded to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, s pecificall y th e drag stri p, to compe te in drag races organized by the Las Vega s Pol ice Departm ent; wh om organized it with the theory t hat allowing peo ple to dra g race, legally, at a c losed circuit, would prevent stre et racing . Despite the high performance of their car s, the trio were beaten by modified producti on car s, and 4 WD cars, in e ach of their drag races . News: Jeremy comes up with a solution on how to solve the crisis affecting Br itain's town centres: sacking all traffic w ardens and removing double yellow lines . The trio then revie w a Chinese product designed to stop drowsin ess behind the wheel, before they took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They prais ed its s tylin g, but c riticized its high price tag of £60,0 00, as well as its target aud ience. Jam es menti ons Peugeot Citroen& #39;s car intended to run on compres sed ai r; Jeremy attemp ted to use a fire extinguisher to dem onstrate, but failed after o nly causing himself to turn s lowly around . Challenge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, Jame s and Richard make fun of Jeremy's LFA for la cking not only Bluetooth con nection and iPod connectors, but c up holders, despi te being t he most expensive ca r. They are then tasked to head to W illow Springs Internationa l Moto rsports Park, but they inst ead stop on a groove d road, w here each car drives over the grooves and produces note s. When they reach Willow Spri ngs, the y are forced to play an aerial v ersion of La ser Quest, where they would dr ive 5 la ps around the tra ck, whilst being chased by two Aermacch i SF.260 arme d with lase r guns. In the en d, Jam es won th e challenge by being hit only 1 7 times. Star in a Reasonably Pri ced Ca r: Fleetwo od Mac39;s Mick Fl eetwood drove the Kia Cee ' ;d ar ound the Test Tra ck with a lap of 1 :45.4. Challenge , Pa rt 3: Departing Willow Springs, th e group headed for Los Ange les, Califo rnia. In ord er to do "real world " testi ng, Rich ard devised a challen ge to s ee who cou ld burn the best eleve ns. The three in stea d ended up drawi ng a phallus and left LA . The team then stayed for a night in Palm Sp rings . However, the producer s gave them a final c hallenge. The three would drive from Palm Spring s to the Mexi can border at Calex ico the followi ng morning , and the last to make it t o the Mexica n border would have to travel into the count ry itsel f to d rive the Mastretta M XT, a Mexi can sports car ma de fun of by the pres enter s in an earlier series, for a later segm ent on t he show. In revenge for taking them t o Ameri ca, Jeremy and James sabotaged Hammond 39;s Viper, causing him t o lose 10 mi nutes in the race. Despite making a stop for fuel, Jeremy made i t to the finish line first, wi th Ja mes in second. Richard then walked to the border being the last person to arrive. At the studio, James and Jeremy e nd by saying that the Viper was awful and tha t the Van quish and LFA were amazi ng. 150 Series 19, Episode 3 10 February 2 013 Amy Macdonald Review: Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Sub aru BRZ. The cars a re almost iden tical, but Jeremy pref ers the Toy ota GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the Test Tr ack in 1:31:3. News: They discuss the new S ubaru Impr eza, which is not coming to UK, a nd they then talk about the new Maserati Quattroporte. Challe nge, P art 1: T he prod ucers hav e reserve d a single ticket to a football match at the San Siro in Milan, Northern Italy. The trio ha ve a race from Wem bley Sta dium to the Sa n Siro. Jerem y drives the Shelby Mustang GT500 and Richard and James trav el on public transport . Simi lar to the previous rac e to Monte Carlo, R ichard and James are not allowed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not a llowed to use any trains. Acco rding to Jeremy, since the last epic race, the trains have bec ome f aster and boat s have beco me slower. Richard and James opened up a big lead whilst travelling on th e Eurostar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing t he Engl ish Channel on a ferry. After reaching F rance, Jeremy di scovers tha t the Mustan g only holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After le avin g Paris, Ric hard and James discuss what to do upon arriving i n Mil an — as there are two of them bu t only one ticket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the ch allenge statin g out loud, "I'm gonna lose!" Star i n a Reasonably Price d Car: A my Macd onald drove the Kia Cee39;d around the Test Track in 1:44.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy a ccide ntally d estroye d one of the runway lights, w hich Jerem y gives to her after re vealing the lap time. Challenge, Part 2: The high spe ed TGV slowed down as it approached th e mo untains that surrou nd Northern Italy. Jeremy began to cat ch up and w as nearly neck and neck with the train, until r oad works at the Mont Blanc Tu nnel slow him do wn. The train start s to acc eler ate again and reaches Northern Italy ah ead of Jeremy. Richard and James u se a tube network to get to the streets near the f inish line. J ames maintains hi s opposition to run on televis ion and Richard runs off alone to find th e finish lin e, which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Cl iequot. James then assembled a bike which he had hidden in one of his bags and rides to th e ba r, only to find t hat Richard is already there and has won the race and th e ticket t o the football match. Momen ts later, Jeremy arri ved and accep ted defeat for the f irst time ever in an epic race of all the series. 151 Series 19 , Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilton Review: Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall Astra VXR, F ord Focus ST and Rena ult Megane Renault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of each car, t he Focus b eing the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra VX R at 1:28.3, and the Megane in 1 :27.7. Despite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as t he best overall car of t he three. News: Th ey discuss the newest cars, s uch as t he Alfa Rome o 4C, the next generatio n Ford Mustang would be sold in Great Brit ain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoBoost engine, an d the importance of the handbrake turn in "ma le deve lopment". Revie w: Jer emy tests the all ne w Kia Cee 9;d, pu tting it through a myriad of strange road tests. Jeremy 39;s team wi ns. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 February 2013 James McAvoy C hallenge, Part 1: Jeremy and Richard attempt to design a car targeted at elderly people. Je remy demo nstrates the co mplexity of moder n cars' dshb oard . Richard brings a Fiat Mult ipla and b oth modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashbo ard and repla ces it considering it to be too co mplicate d for elders . Richard asks f or the airbags s aying that i t is dangerous for the el derly who are as delicate as children, and that he needs it for a s afety fea ture. Jeremy mak es a s peedometer which reads 20 mph at the top speed, he also us es an old design switch for rear fog light whi ch do es nothi ng. Jerem y installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with h igh seat ch airs and the Fiat badge with a Rover on e. They paint it in beige after observing th e shade of a he aring aid. Richard uses water -resistant fabric as seat covers, and whil e stitch ing hurts his eye. They complete t he car and e nd the part 1 with Ric hard wear ing heavy bandages over hi s left eye. News: Volks wage n will launch GTI version o f the new Golf and GT vers ion of Up wi ll b e launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee'd GT . The Min i Paceman is la unched, and the tr io mock the front end of th e car, cl aiming that it lo oks depressing. The trio agree that the British a re the best d rivers. Alfa-Rome o releases photographs of the Gloria, in which t he tr io make fun of it';s na me. Richard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had att empted to play tennis with car s (which has a lot of edi ting). Review: James reviews the new Range Ro ver in London. The new car is completely redes igned, 400 kg lighter due to Aluminium b ody, has active sus pension, new gearbox, mi nimali st dashboard and offers bett er comfort. James then races it against Te rraMax at Nevada Auto motive Test Centre, Nevada. The ra ce was to a hill 10 mile acros s, pass ing through rocky terrain, hillock, mud, river and sand-tr acks. TerraMax was swit ched to drone mode during the race t o deflate the tyres and tak e a short-c ut. The Range Rover 's automatic Terrain Respo nse System is demonstrated. James takes a longer r oute to a scend the hill but still wins the rac e. At the studi o, the trio consider the dr iverless cars to be not ve ry practical. Star In A Reasonably Pric ed Ca r: Ja mes McAvoy drove th e Kia Cee'd around the T est Tra ck with a lap of 1:43.6 d espite having less exper ience of dri ving cars. H e drove over grassy patch in the las t corner but manages to keep the ca r under control. Challenge, P art 2: Jeremy an d Richard road-t est thei r car at Ch ristchurch, Dorset. The car has lar ge f ront bumpers made up of foam, large rear- view mi rrors, sq ueakin g ball under the brake-pedal, large magnifying-glass on the dashbo ard, sat na v (voiced by Richar d Briers) with only four destina tons. The car has an artif icial cat on the roof w hich later fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later shows his sy stem to find the locati on of parked car (the car activates a flare and then releases a ballo on). J eremy sh ows that the radio only plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a lo op, which bo th later find to be irresis tible to clap along. The name of the car is re vealed to b e The James. They pick up three elderl y ladies from a pensioners' home for road-testing and d rive them t o a bowling club w here it is shown that Richa rd fit ted the airbag at the rear f or parking assist which inflates the airbag o n close p roximity. Jeremy and Richard buy food for picnic, choosing onl y British foods. T hey att ach the s hopping trol ley to Tow hitch a nd head f or picnic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up choosi ng a pi cnic spot on roadsid e where the y find the trolley to be damaged du ring reversing and the food to be soaked , however th ey at e the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchu rch and Je remy shows h is syst em to prevent th e car fr om being d riven on t he wr ong side o f th e road, the car ini tially sounds alarm and later the tyre s, d oors a nd other par ts of the car explode w hich stops the car and ren ders it immobile. At the studio, Jame s considers the heater to be com plicated, the t rio thank Richard Briers and announce t he Afr ica special. 153 Serie s 19, Episode 6 3 March 2 013 No Guest F irst of the two-episod e Africa Special, takin g place in Africa. The episode was shot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used estate car s for u p to £1, 500 in Britain an d report at a small village in rural Uganda. Jeremy ar rives in a BMW 528i Touring , Richa rd in a Subaru Impreza WRX E state and Jam es in a Volvo 85 0R W agon. The ch allenge is to find the true source of the river Ni le. They set off an disc over that e xploring isn& #39;t as difficul t as first though t when th ey go on a nic e easy drive and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Victori an Explorers th ought wa s the source of the Nile. H owever they are then told that it is not the actual source of the Nile and there were tw o other disputed locations for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burun di. H owever, Jere my Clarkson insisted th at both of thes e locations were wrong and decided to head west towards Lake Edward to see wh ether there was a link between that lake and Lake Kiv u in Rwanda. In their journey west, w here they visit the Entebbe Airport and from t here see the Ford S corpio E state back-up car. They conti nue int o Kampa la, Uganda's Capital City where they get held up in a traffic jam overn ight, the most hurr endous traffic they 9;d ever seen. They continu e on well -main tained h ighways west findin g their trip incredi bly easy be fore reaching the town of Mba rara in the southwe st of the country, via a stop i n Jezza, a village in Mpigi District. He re they stay i n a disg ustin g hotel, afte r dri ving throu gh tea pl antatio ns in an attempt to di scover a lovely te ahous e hotel, which in t he mind of R ichard, was bound to f ound due to tea programmes he'd seen. In Mbarara they stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy h avin g a bed with faeces on it. They left th e hotel disgusted before Ric hard has th e idea to m ake the car s 'ho tels 9;. James modifies hi s Volvo by adding a library, Richard adds a cook er and Jeremy adds a coffin. The c offin he use s to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Eg yptian Cotton. The y le ave for Lak e Edward, camping ov ernigh t th ere because of its beauty befo re heading in s earch of the rive r heading for Lake Kivu. N one of the r ivers connect the lak e as the y all head east rathe r than south. They give up, leaving the m disappointed. Then Jeremy l ooks at a ma p and discovers the source of the Nil e must be on the other side of La ke Victor ia. His re asoning is that the Mediterranean Se a is ef fectively an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the tru e mouth of the Nil e, rather than Alexandria in Egypt. After discov ering th is they dec ide tha t they must dri ve straig ht to the other si de of La ke Victori a to get to t he southeast coast i n Tanza nia near t he Sereng eti.
