《魔鬼的陷阱》是由知名导演法蘭提塞·維拉席 执导的一部劇情片,Vítezslav Vejrazka 米羅斯拉夫· 等倾情出演,该片讲述了: In t he time of Counter-Reformation, a miller and hi s son come under investigation by a priest of the Inquis ition, whe n rumors spread tha t their pros perity comes from wor king with the Devil. The Devil's Tra p is a film directed by František Vlá?il, based on a novel by Alfréd Technik, adapt ed by František A. Dvorák an d Miloš K ratochvíl . It was the first of three hist orical dramas th at Vlá?il made during the Czech New Wav e (technically he isn't really a pa rt of the New Wave, however t hese films were mad e durin g the same er a of arti stic freedom), prec eding his more well known Marketa Lazarová (1967) and Valley of the Bees (1968). Set i n the la te 16th Cent ury during the Catholic Reforma tion, in the Moravian Karst, situ ated in what is now the Ea stern C zech Repub lic, it tells the t ale of a miller (V ítezslav Vejrazka), and hi s son J an (Vít Ol mer), who come un der suspicion and are investigated by a Jesuit pries t of the In quisiti on (Miroslav Machác hek), when rumors of wit chcraft are spread by the local regent (Cestm ír Randa), who is jealo us of the mi ller's prosperity and degree of respec t among the local pop ulace. As expected from Vlá?il, this f ilm is a stunning experience all the way throu gh. Fro m the opening shot, an ominous manipulation of perspec tive wi th a close up of a mangled figure of C hrist dominating the foreground aga inst a tiny figure in black w alking along th e horizon, to the breathtak ing confrontationa l fi nale ins ide the vast stalactite filled Karst caverns, it is a wonderful display of visual mastery. May be not quite as impress ive as Mar keta Lazarová, but still ful l of astoni shing imagery. As seen from unique angles a nd disti nct points of view which highlight the d irector';s r emarkable s ense of a warenes s of framing, motio n, and p ositioning o n the emotion al a nd dramati c tone of the scene. T he most memorable being a repe ated s hot where the camera is suspended and launc hed wit h speed thro ugh the ai r towards th e miller's door. The story here is a simpl e one and I would say mor e accessible than his later works. With a conventi onal structure em phasized as much by its plot and characters, tha n by its expre ssio nistic ci nematography or authentic histori cal detail. The events play out without much surprise, and there is a strong un derlying, al most supernatural , mys terious aspect that is le ft unr esolved, in fact ba rely expl ored, which is slightly disappointing, but onl y because it's so fascinat ing that I w ish there wa s more. Acting i s great all around. Particul arly the villains: Miroslav Machá chek as the priest, casting a sinister and imposing s hadow wherever he goes, and Cestmír Randa a s the w easel like r egent behind all the persecution. While Vít Olmer brings a charismatic l eading man presence in h is role as the mil ler' ;s son Jan, in love with the love ly o rphan girl Mar tina (Karla Chad imová), who becomes a dangerous obj ect of rival ry between Jan and other you ng m en of t he village. The film also features the evocative music of Zd en?k Liška (perha ps the most prolifi c composer of the Czech New Wa ve). In thi s his se cond of eleven colla boratio ns with Vlá?il, his composi tions ar e used spar ingly, but to great effect, complimenti ng but nev er overpowering a scene. The best example of whic h can be heard in an amazi ngly sho t celebration and dance sequence at the en d of the seco nd a ct. The Devil' ;s Trap might not be a master piece, but it is still a stron g effort, with a fascinating straightf orward s tory and a glorious histori cal setti ng capt ured beautif ully by Vlá ?il';s unmistakable v isual prowe ss. A fine work that would also be th e pe rfect st arter plate to prepare yourself for the challenging feast of Marketa Lazaro vá or The Valley of the Be es. It even has an ea sy to diges t runni ng time. It';s therefore puzzli ng why this gem remains largely overlooked a nd ignored.
