Though Sam saw not hing, the eve nt was witne ssed by Walter O' Neil (Mick ey Kuhn), the son of Martha's tutor (Ro man Bohnen), k nown as M r. O' ;Neil. Martha l ies about the incident to Mr. O'Neil, and Walter supp orts he r.[5] Mr. O';Neil suspects what happene d but pre sents M artha's version of events to the police, that an intrud er is re sponsible; he makes use of his knowledge by having he r marry hi s son. When the police identify a former empl oyee of the aunt as the m urderer, the two O'Neils and Ma rtha help convic t him ; he is punished by hangi ng.[5] Eighteen years later, the older O&# 39;Neil has died. Walte r (now pl ayed by Kirk Douglas) i s the district attorney , while Mart ha (Barbara Stanwyck) has used her inheritanc e from her aunt to build a lar ge business empire. Their marriage i s one-sid ed; he love s her, but she does not love him. Sa m (Van Heflin), now a drifte r an d gambler, s tops in the sma ll town by chan ce to have his car repaired after an accid ent. Whi le waiting for repairs, at his ol d home, now a boarding house, he meets A ntonia "Toni" Marachek (L izabeth Sco tt), who has just been r eleased fro m jail. She i s late r picked up fo r violating her probation by not re turning to her hometown. S am goes to s ee Walter, to see if h e can use hi s influence to get her released. Walter is c onvinced Sam h as returned with blackmail in mind, g iving Walter a motive to run Sam out o f town. W hen Martha reacts with joy to the news o f Sam's return, Walter's jealou sy provides an additional motive. Walter forces Toni to set Sam up. Sam is beaten and driven out of town, but he is too tough to be intimidated. When all else fails, Walter makes a half-hearted attempt to kill Sam hi mself, but is ea sily disarmed. Ma rtha then in adverte ntly blurts out the coupl e's fear s of b lackm ail, which prove to be groundles s: Sam says he did not witn ess the death. Marth a brea ks down and laments that he left without her all those years ago, taki ng with him her on ly chan ce for love and freedom. Sam i s torn betwe en his old love and his new. Although he eventually forgives Toni for betray ing him, he and Martha spe nd an idyllic day together, rekindling his feelings for h er. Walte r arrang es to meet Sam to finally settle matters. Before Sam arrives, Walter gets drunk and Martha finds out abou t the meeting. When Walte r fal ls down the stairs and is kn ocke d unco nscious, Martha urges Sam to kill him. Sam in stead brings Walter around. Martha pulls out a gun and threatens to shoot Sam in "self defense" as an intruder. However, Sam gambles that Walter will not back up her s tory; he t urns his back on her and leaves. Walte r embraces and kisses his wife; then he points the gun at her midriff . Oddly relieved, she puts her ha nd o ver his hand on the trigger and presses. As she is d ying, she defiantly sta tes her n ame is not Martha I vers, but Martha Smith. Outside, Sam hears the shot. He runs back towar d the mansion, but sees Walter , holdi ng Mar tha's bo dy, sho ot himself.
