She gets Huck's band an engagement at t he nig htclub where she is a featured ente rtainer. Two things trouble John. One is Ladis law ( Victor Va rconi), the handsome Russian d eposed prince and do orma n who seems too interested in Steph anie. The other is th e memo ry of Sophie (Cla ire Dodd), the snobbish, conceited girlfriend he left beh ind aft er a quar rel over his lack of sophistication a nd polish. When Aunt Minnie dies unexpectedly wit hout leavin g a w ill, John inherits the shop. Knowing nothin g about wome n' s fa shion and that his aunt intended for Step hanie to inheri t the busines s, he p ersu ades S teph anie to remai n as his partner. Huck gives the answ ers, making a lot of weird statements abou t the innovatio ns John is plannin g to introduce. Sophie arrives in Paris, attracted by John 's good fortun e. She enters the s hop, looking for a dress, b ut i s dissatisfied with everyt hing Stephanie shows her. Huck per suades her to choose a gown that John had ord ered discarded as t oo vulgar. When John sees her in it, the y quarrel for the fin al ti me. John repr oaches Stephanie for selling Sophie the gown. Terribly hur t, Stephanie quits the shop . With Roberta' ;s putting on a fashion show in a we ek, Huck tak es ove r the design work, with predictably bad results. Wh en Stephanie sees his a wful creation s, sh e is persuaded to ret urn to s ave Robert a';s reputa tion. The show i s a trium ph, helped by the entertaining of Huck, Countess Scharwenka, and th e band. (A pre-stardom Lucille Ball, with platinum blo nd hair, appears uncredited in h er first RKO film[4] as a model wearin g an elaborate feather ca pe, after the vocal by Dunne, in the fashion show.[5]) The closi ng sensation is a gown modeled by Steph anie her self. At the show, John overhea rs that she and Ladislaw ar e leaving Pa ris and mistakenly assumes that they have ma rried. Later, he c ongratulates her fo r becoming a princess. When she informs him that L adislaw is merely her cousin and tha t the title has been h ers since birth, the lovers are reunited.
