Her headstro ng 17-yea r-old step-daughter Barbara, herse lf a pro mising actress, i s enamored wit h her leading man in a s mall theate r product ion, the much older Loth ario Paul Gerente. Paul, wh o had once been Norma's lover, has convinced Barbara that N orma actually wants Paul for hers elf and has only married he r fath er Stephen for his money. At Mac's urging, Norma tried to reason with Pa ul, b ut he insist s that he loves Barbara and laugh s her o ff. Barbara is equally disdainful of her a nd a grees to me et Paul for dinner t hat night at his apartment. Norma's h usband Step hen Lawry is a sc ient ist leavi ng that night on a trip to test a secret i nvention on whic h he has be en working for the government and the war eff ort. Worried about B arbara, she u ses a pretext not to accomp any Stephe n and g oes to the apar tment. Wh en Bar bara arrives , she finds Paul's d ead body and thinks that Norma has k illed h im, e ven tho ugh N orma insists that he was dead when sh e arrived . Barbara threatens to call the police unless s he leaves Stephe n. Fearing that a scanda l will hurt him, Norma agre es. Norma then turns to Mac, who goe s to Pau l9;s a partment wit h Fri day and Marty, only to find the body and the rug un der it missing. A man arrives t o rep lace the rug and Mac hides in a closet, overhearing a tel ephone call to Norma';s number f rom "Gabrie l" to "Ve ra.& quot ; Mac accidentally gives himself awa y, but with Frida y's help overpowers Gabriel, who refuses to talk. Mac has Marty hide him to keep him under wraps. Norma returns to her coun try home unexpectedl y, which discourages an espionage ring that includes he r butler, Hansen, from breaking into Stephen's saf e and stealing his plans. They have killed Gerente, wh o was also an agent, and hidden the bod y. Mac arrives wi th Friday at N orma's house and pretends to be her curmud geonly &qu ot;Uncle Mac" who has come for a visit. His blindness lulls any suspicions Hansen migh t have about him. Shortly thereafter, Ba rbara co mes ho me from an "emergency rehearsal", ca lled to get her out of the house by her dir ector, Cheli Scott, who inveigles an invitation to spend the nig ht at the Lawry home. Unknown to Barbara and Norma, Cheli is the ringleader of the spies. Cheli order ed Pa ul killed because hi s affec tion for Barbara was beginni ng t o limit h is effectiveness , and she imme diately suspects Mac is n ot what he seems. Gabriel's w ife Vera, t he Lawrys ' maid, is also a part o f the p lot. When Gabriel does not return home, Ver a becomes hyste rical with worry. Ma c secretly ask s Vera to meet him in the greenhouse, using he r worry a bout Gab riel as a lure. She i s observed by the othe rs, however, and is kill ed by Han sen befo re s he can reach Mac. The spies cut the h ouse's tel ephone wir es so that M ac and Norma cannot call th e police, and Cheli has Mac locked up u nder guard . Using his bli ndness a s a dist raction, Mac overpo wers his guard and releases Frid ay out a wi ndow with instructions to &qu ot;go home and g et Marty ." Stephen arrives home and Cheli threatens his famil y if he does not give her the final s tep in creating his invention, whic h wa s no t in the safe. Barbara finally realizes how much Norma actually c ares for her. Mac tries to sta ll for time, but is locked in the cell ar. When H ansen goe s to kill him, Mac has broken the ligh t bulb and his a dvantage of total d arkness h elps him ove rcome the spy. Mart y and Friday retu rn with the police. When Friday is spotted by a looko ut, Mac overpow ers him and is saved from being s hot b y ano ther lookout by Friday.
