Si nce Fitzge rald is now married to the wealthy Huntley, Milland believes he can use the letters to blackmail Fitzger ald. Todd';s love for Mi llan d is so great that s he goes along with the plan. Huntley, however, learns of the sch eme and also uncover s details of Mill and's sh ady past. Fear ing for h er lover';s safety, Todd poisons Huntley, then rem ains s ilent whe n Fitzgerald is arrested for the murder . Milland has by no w genuinely fallen in love with Todd and the two make plans to leave England. Befor e they can depart, one of Milland's former lovers shows up and Todd, in a jealous rage, kills Milland, then turns herself into the po lice. This is an intrigu ing film, although a litt le on th e talky side. The per formances are excell ent throughout, with Milland shining a s the cad, the type of role in which he ex celled. Thou gh he spent most of his time making films in the US, he o ccasion ally returned to his native Engl and for a production a nd this was his first British film si nce FRENCH WITHOUT TEARS in 19 39. Dir ector Allen w as also an Englishman who ch ose to work in the US, this being his first directo rial effo rt in his homeland.
