At a party , Bob meets a young woman, Mic, who appears to be just as carefree and cynical as Al ain. Mic 9;s only dream is to own a luxury car , and with Bob's help, she manages t o find the money to but it. Mic's friend C lo discover s she is pregnant and, not knowing who the father is, she asks Bob to marry her. When they next meet at a party, Bob and Mic deny that t hey have any feelings for one anothe r - a decl aration that so on leads to tragedy... Marcel Carné is widely regarded a s one of t he standard bearer s of French qualit y cin ema o f the 1930s and 1940s, responsi ble for such masterpiece s as Quai des brumes (1 938) and Le s Enfants du Par adis (1945). How ironic then that, in 1958, towa rds the e nd of his film-maki ng career , he should make a film which dared to portray the atti tudes and behaviour of the 1 950s youth, in a way that effectiv ely captures the mood and senti ment of t he time. Les Tr icheurs w as a hugely controversial film, not le ast because of its blatant depiction of adolescent free-love, and wa s even banned in s ome regions of Fra nce. It also received some intensely unfavourable revi ews, most notably from t he young hot heads on the Cahiers du ciném a such as Franço is Truffa ut who ci ted t his film as a prim e examp le of the decline of French cinem a into medio crity. In spite of al l this negative press, the film proved to be an asto nish ing comme rcial success, attracting five milli on cinema-goers, and was awarded the Gr and Prix du Cinéma français in 1 958. W hilst L es Tricheurs is not as flawless as Carné 's earlier masterpieces, it is nonetheless a significant work , having the pow er to both shock and mo ve its audie nce, whilst hav ing great entertainment valu e. It evokes the mood of its tim e in a way that few French films of this period did, depicting young people as pleasure-seeking reb els, reje cting the au sterity and discip line of the pre vious genera tion whils t purs uing a life with out ca res, respons ibilities or love. Sim ilarit ies with James D ean 9;s films of the 1950s (mo st notably Rebel without a Caus e) are apparent, although Carné ';s treatment of young people is far mo re abstract - in his film they merely symbolise a world that has lost its way, more or le ss victims of post-wa r prospe rity. Although the young people in Les Tricheurs lack the authenticity to be totall y credible, the fi lm does make an important, and indeed qu ite disturbi ng poin t, abo ut where t he permissiv e society ma y be headin g. Much of th e pleasur e of the film is in the per formances from its f our lead actors, Ja cques Ch arrier, Pascale Petit, Laurent Terzieff and Andréa Pa risy, although only Terzieff is really convincing in his ro le. Marcel C arné originally considered Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo f or the parts of Bob and Alain respective ly, b efore opting for Ch arrier and Terzieff. As a con solation, Carné offered Belmondo a smaller par t in the film - alas too small for the actor to be noticed by the pub lic. Belmond o's breakthrough had to wa it until the followi ng year when h e starred in Je an-Luc Goda rd's r evolution ary A bout de souffl e, a film which offers a very differen t perspectiv e of the youth generat ion.
